Chelsea celebrate third Women's Super League triumph despite sitting second when season was halted

Chelsea have been crowned champions for the third time in five years after they were awarded the Women’s Super League title by a points-per-game ratio.

Emma Hayes’ side sat second in the table when the season was suspended due to the coronavirus back in March.

However, they leapfrogged Manchester City to claim the title due to the fact they were just one point behind the league leaders and had a game in hand.

It means the Blues reclaim the WSL title in a campaign where they remained unbeaten, winning 12 and drawing three of their 15 games.

Bethany England finished joint top scorer in the division with 14 goals alongside Arsenal striker Vivianne Miedema.

Captain Magdalena Eriksson took the time to thank the fans for all the support the team have received in a video message on social media.

And former Blues players Hedvig Lindahl and Claire Rafferty congratulated their ex-teammates.

Lindahl said: "Congratulations to all former colleagues at @ChelseaFCW for winning the @BarclaysFAWSL and qualifying for the @ChampionsLeague.

"Party popper Never seen a more clear example of how important it is to take each game as if it is the last."

And Chelsea supporters poured onto Twitter in their droves to revel in their team’s title victory.

Along with their triumph, Chelsea also moved level with rivals Arsenal to jointly hold the record for most WSL titles.
