LPGA suspends play for several weeks as first major of the year ANA Inspiration is postponed

The LPGA Tour has suspended three events in March and early April due to coronavirus, including the first major of the year, ANA Inspiration.

Due to the pandemic, the California-based tournament has been postponed along with The Founders Cup in Arizona and the Kia Classic in Los Angeles.

And while LPGA commissioner Mike Whan admitted it was a disappointment to have to postpone the events, he ensured they will be played at a later date.

"This is a difficult situation. As we navigate these uncertain times, we appreciate the support of all those involved with the LPGA," he said.

"I am fully committed to rescheduling these important events on our 2020 schedule, especially our first major, the ANA Inspiration.

"Our thoughts are with all of those around the world affected by this virus. And on a personal level, it pains me to see the impact of this health crisis on our athletes, our sponsors and our fans. That said, I know keeping our LPGA family safe, and all those who follow us safe, has to be my top priority."

Meanwhile, the PGA Tour announced on Friday that the Players' Championship had been cancelled after one round in an attempt to combat the spread of the coronavirus.
