Katie Taylor and Wendie Renard nominated for World Sport Star award at Sports Personality of the Year

World champion boxer Katie Taylor and Champions League winner Wendie Renard are among those nominated for the World Sport Star award at the 2020 Sports Personality of the Year.

Taylor, 34, defended her undisputed lightweight crown twice this year as she defeated both Delfine Persoon and Miriam Gutierrez by unanimous decision.

Her victory over Persoon in their rematch came 14 months after she was controversially awarded the win against the Belgian despite many feeling she had lost the contest in New York.

She then decided to face Persoon once again in August and came out on top in another close fight.

Less than three months later, Taylor was back in the ring once more as she put on a scintillating display of boxing to dominate her mandatory challenger Gutierrez and move to 17-0 as a professional.

Meanwhile, Lyon captain Renard has had another perfect year as she collected a fifth successive Champions League title.

The 30-year-old, who has been with Lyon since 2006, also claimed a 14th successive Division 1 Feminine title and ninth consecutive Coupe de France.

On an individual level, the centre-back was named in the UEFA squad of the season and nominated for the Best FIFA Women’s Player award.

The other nominees are pole vaulter Armand Duplantis, basketball player LeBron James, golfer Dustin Johnson and UFC star Khabib Nurmagomedov.

The winner will be announced at the awards show on December 20 and is being decided via a public vote.
