Maria Sharapova withdraws from the Hawaii Open at last minute

Grand Slam winner Maria Sharapova has withdrawn at the last minute from the Hawaii Open as she needs 'more time and preparation' ahead of the 2020 season.

The former world No 1 will be replaced by USA youngster Alyssa Tobita.

The 32-year-old Russian said: "I’m disappointed to announce my withdrawal from the Hawaii Open.

"I find myself needing a little more time and preparation before my first tournament back. I wish I could be there to see my fans who were coming to watch me play."

The tournament is an invitation-only event which acts as a time for players to prepare for the Australian Open in January next year.
