Former world No 1 golf star So Yeon Ryu won her first Korean Women’s Open Championship title on Sunday. 

The 29 year-old shot a final round even-par 72 for a 12-under total to seal victory at the Bear’s Best Cheong Na Golf Club in Incheon.

She has competed in the national championship five times but managed to come away with a win in her first competition since the coronavirus pandemic began.

Ryu also announced she will be donating her entire winnings of $206,000 to coronavirus relief funds. 

The two-time LPGA major champion said: "Before the awards ceremony, I called my mom. I told her that I’m going to make the announcement so don’t get too surprised. She was just as happy I was. 

“Since this tournament has a lot of meaning to me and I thought that I may be able to play better if I had a positive goal."

On her performance, she added: "Since it’s been a while since I competed in a tournament, I did want to win.

“But rather than being greedy, I just told myself to do my job. I was glad that I didn’t lose my focus until the end.”
