Nike launches hijab for female swimmers as part of its first ever modest swimwear collection

Nike have unveiled their first modest swimwear collection, including a hijab that can be worn in the water. will be released in February 2020.

The swimwear collection was created off the back of the success of the company's sportswear hijab which was designed for female athletes.

A Nike spokesperson said: “Existing products were lacking in either coverage or functionality, leaving [athletes] feeling weighed down by baggy garments, battling drag instead of striving toward personal bests.

"Or worrying about whether their hijabs and coverings would remain in place."

Nike creative director, Martha Moore, said: “We’re excited to inspire more women to see themselves in sport by thinking creatively and designing inclusively.”

The collection includes the hijab, a full-coverage swimsuit, swim leggings and a swim tunic top, all made from light-weight, quick-drying warp-knit fabric that also provides UPF 40+ sun protection.

An integrated mesh pocket is also featured in the hijab so as to hold hair in place during movement underwater.

Emirati figure skater Zahra Lari, who was the first in her sport to wear a hijab for competition, swims as part of her training and was invited to test the product.

"It doesn't weigh you down," she said, "it helped me swim much better.

"It's so different than any of the swimsuits I've ever seen, and I know I can wear this confidently."

The collection will be available to buy in Nike London stores and online from February 1.
