As WTA Finals get underway, there's record-breaking prize money up for grabs

A record-breaking $14m in prize money - double that of last year - is available in The WTA Finals in Shenzhen.

The women's tour season finale, which starts today, sees the world's top eight tennis players battle it out for the chance to claim the title and the hefty sum of $4.7m, but only if they are undefeated throughout the round-robin.

The eight players, Bianca Andreescu, Ashleigh Barty, Belinda Bencic, Simona Halep, Petra Kvitova, Naomi Osaka, Karolina Pliskova and Elina Svitolina have triumphed throughout 2019 to earn their place at the Tour's crown jewel event and each receive a flat participation fee of $385,000.

On top of this, the players pocket $305,000 for each round robin victory, meaning an undefeated group winner would earn a total $1.3m after the group stages.

In the final the two women will fight for the title prize money of $3.425m meaning that an undefeated victor could take home $4.725m while the runner-up will earn a bonus of $1.1m for reaching the final, leaving a potential prize money of $2.4m.
