Maria Sharapova inspired by Andy Murray's documentary showing his road to recovery from hip injury

Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova has told how she was inspired by Andy Murray's documentary 'Resurfacing' charting his journey back to fitness.

She has described it as an 'amazing reflection of what it takes to get to the top' following his career threatening hip injury.

"I love seeing what an athlete’s mind is going through," said the 32-year-old.

"I can very much relate to the feelings they go through and the moments a lot of people don’t see, and having access to an athlete like him."

At the start of the year, Murray said the Australian Open could be his last tournament. But the decision to have another operation resulted in success, after he won the doubles' title at Queen's and the singles at the European Open in Antwerp.

"When you achieve a lot and people ask – especially when you’re struggling or have injuries – why you keep going, sometimes there is no perfect answer," said Sharapova.

"Sometimes those answers might seem stupid but for some reason we keep going, so I really enjoyed [the documentary] from that perspective."

Sharapova has not won a Grand Slam tournament since the 2014 French Open. She has struggled to reach her former top world ranked status after she was suspended in 2016 for a failed drugs test.

The Russian athlete has recently praised 19-time Grand Slam champion Rafa Nadal claiming he is 'really smart strategically about his schedule' and that she can 'learn from him'.
