Naomi Osaka to star in behind-the-scenes Netflix documentary

Tennis fans will get a rare behind-the-scenes look into the life of tennis phenomenon Naomi Osaka in an upcoming Netflix documentary announced yesterday.

The series follows the superstar’s journey from last year’s US Open through this year’s Grand Slams and preparations for Tokyo 2020.

But the documentary also offers raw and candid interviews with the elite athlete as she navigates fame, pressure and growing up in the public eye.

Osaka said: “To be able to tell my story and let people in during this big year, working with a team that really understands me, has been a rewarding experience.

“It won't look like a traditional sports documentary, and I'm so excited to share it with everyone.”

The team behind the project includes NBA star LeBron James’ Uninterrupted, a media company which says it’s 'about athletes sharing their story from their point of view. Raw and direct'.

The off-court footage includes moving scenes with Osaka on a pilgrimage to her birth country.

The two-time Grand Slam winner was born in Japan and emigrated to the United States with her parents when she was three years old.

Osaka, whose mother is Japanese and father is Hatian, relinquished her American citizenship last year so she could compete for Japan at the Olympics this summer.

Despite living in the United States for most of her life, the tennis player has always maintained a strong connection to Japan and the documentary will dig deep into the athlete’s relationship to her multi-cultural identity.

Speaking to Time, she said: “I don’t really know what feeling Japanese or Haitian or American is supposed to feel like. I just feel like me.”

Netflix has not yet announced a release date.
