Osaka beats Andreescu in nail-biting China Open quarter-final

Naomi Osaka has beaten Bianca Andreescu in the China Open to end the Canadian's long winning streak.

The match between the pair, who had not previously played each other, went to three sets and was hotly contested.

In the first set the Canadian broke Osaka's serve in the first game but the Japanese star fought back to make it 5-5. Andreescu won the next two games to take the set.

The second set saw both women break each other's serve. Andreescu broke Osaka in the second game who then broke back in the sixth. This brought it level at 3-3 but proved to be a momentum swing as Osaka went on to win the set 6-3.

The third set was more of the same with both players trading blows. But finally, after two match points while 5-4 up, Osaka closed out the set to take the match.

Andreescu had said before the match: "I'm really excited. I know it's not going to be easy at all."

The Canadian had previously remarked that she had "forgotten how to lose" having been on an unbeaten 17-match run.

Osaka now faces Caroline Wozniacki, who beat Daria Kasatkina, in the semi-finals.

The other semi-final will be between Ashleigh Barty and Kiki Bertens. Bertens beat Elina Svitolina in straight sets. Barty was up against Petra Kviotova and came back from a set down to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Both semi-finals will be played tomorrow.
