Defending champions Arsenal end the year top of the Women's Super League table while Manchester City slot five past Brighton

Manchester City made it a festive five against Brighton but it's Arsenal who sit on top of the Christmas tree as the Women's Super League takes a break until the New Year.

England star Steph Houghton was first on the score sheet for the ladies in light blue slotting in a free-kick. Ellen White followed up soon after with an impressive volley and a header from Lauren Hemp put City 3-0 inside the opening 38 minutes.

Brighton picked up their game in the second half but couldn't stop the might of City who added another two with some fine work from Georgia Stanway taking on goalkeeper Sophie Harris, and a nifty flick from Pauline Bremer making it five and putting them second in the table.

Top-of-the-table defending champions Arsenal impressed with a 3-1 win over Everton but the real talking point was yet another display from Vivianne Miedema who scored two and now has 14 this season.

The other talking point from the game was the loss of England forward Beth Mead to a suspected serious leg injury.

24-year-old Mead was treated on the pitch for five minutes before having to be carried off.

Meanwhile Chelsea managed to maintain their unbeaten record, but were held to a 1-1 draw at struggling Liverpool.

Reading also came from behind to win 3-1 against Tottenham Hotspur.

Waterlogged pitches meant Birmingham City's home game against Manchester United was postponed as was West Ham United's trip to Bristol City.

The eague now takes a break and returns on Sunday January 5.
