City earn 1-0 victory in Manchester derby as WSL gets underway at the Etihad

Manchester City secured a 1-0 victory in a Manchester derby at the Etihad -  the opening clash in the much-anticipated start to the Women’s Super League season.

Midfielder Caroline Weir scored the only goal as she drove a powerful strike into the top corner of the net from the edge of the box.

Throughout the first half both teams had several opportunities in their attacking quarter but neither side could find the back of the net.

The hosts looked strong across all areas of the pitch but United found their feet and broke down City’s defence, creating several chances.

United’s newest signing, Lotta Okvist from Sweden, created a perfect line on the left side of the pitch before crossing the ball across to Jane Ross on the penalty spot but City’s goalkeeper Ellie Roebuck saved the ball on the line.

Weir was named player of the match as she remained consistently calm throughout the game landing strong first touches in the area and striking the only goal past Mary Earps.

Half time came and the scoresheet remained 0-0, United seeming more enthusiastic than the hosts.

City passed around the back under captain Steph Houghton’s lead and attempted to create a second goal but United defender Abbie McManus blocked the chance.

Casey Stoney’s newly-promoted side continued to produce strong link-up play in the midfield as they attempted to push the ball forward to isolate City.

The blue shirts came out on top this time round but the sides will meet again next month at Leigh Sports Village Stadium.
