England footballer Lucy Bronze has won UEFA Women’s Player of the Year award

Lioness Lucy Bronze has won the UEFA Women’s Player of the Year award, the first ever England player, male or female to have won it.

The 27-year-old was up against fellow Lyon team-mates, previous Ballon d’Or winner Norway’s Ada Hegeberg and Amandine Henry who has been in the top three for the fourth year running.

The award is presented to a female footballer who is considered the best player domestically and internationally. It is voted for by top coaches and journalists in the women’s game and can be won by any player shortlisted who represents a club in UEFA’s member associations.

The right-back signed a three-year contract for Lyon back in 2017 and has won the Champions League twice, Division 1 Feminine (domestic league in France) twice and the domestic cup.

She was also part of the Lioness's squad as they lifted the trophy at the SheBelieves Cup in the USA and helped her country reach a World Cup semi-final.

Bronze finished fifth in last year's Women’s Player of the Year award.

During this summer’s World Cup she came second for the best player award, behind the USA’s Megan Rapinoe.
