England's Lucy Bronze up for FIFA Women's Player of the Year alongside American duo Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan

Lucy Bronze, Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe will tonight learn who has won the Best FIFA Women's Player award.

The winner is decided by media representatives, national team coaches, national team captains and the public, with each group receiving a 25% share of the overall vote.

All three women have won other individual awards recently - Rapinoe the Golden Ball for best player at the World Cup, Morgan the Golden Boot for most goals at the same tournament, and Bronze the UEFA Women's Player of the Year.

The trio have a couple of things in common in that none of them have previously been nominated for the award - only the third time that has been the case since 2001.

And all three players have had various spells with European champions Lyon - Rapinoe in the 2013/14 season, Morgan on loan in 2017, and Bronze is currently at the club.

So, who will scoop the prize? Let's take a more detailed look at each of the three nominees.

Lucy Bronze

Lucy Bronze is only the second Englishwoman after Kelly Smith in 2009 to be in the top three shortlist.

She reached the semi-finals of the World Cup with England and was voted the best non-American player at the tournament.

And with Lyon she was a vital part of the side which won a 13th successive French league title and fourth consecutive Champions League.

Bronze could become just the fourth player to do the double of winning UEFA Women’s Player of the Year and the Best FIFA Women’s Player in the same year.

Alex Morgan

If either Megan Rapinoe or Alex Morgan win, USA will equal Brazil for the nation with the most winners of the award with six.

The American striker missed out on the award in 2012 when she came third to fellow countrywoman Abby Wambach and Brazilian Marta.

She followed up a stellar 2018 season with the national team - where she scored 18 goals in 19 games - by finishing as the joint-top scorer at the World Cup and netted the decisive strike in their 2-1 semi-final win over England.

All in all, she has scored a remarkable 17 goals for the US over the past 12 months and proved herself as the most prolific international striker in the world.

Megan Rapinoe

Megan Rapinoe was the captain that led USA to a historic fourth World Cup trophy back in July.

She scored six goals at the tournament - the same number as teammate Alex Morgan but with one less assist - and bagged the opening goal in the final.

Off the field she has also been very vocal about equal pay between the men's and women's teams as the US women's side is currently embroiled in a legal battle with the United States Soccer Federation over the matter.

Her leader-like persona off the field could contribute to her taking the award as off-field sporting success is also considered.
