Spanish players' strike goes ahead and sees all eight Primera División matches postponed

Female Spanish footballers went on strike at the weekend after their pay dispute was not resolved.

This led to all eight Primera Division fixtures being postponed.

The decision to strike was made in October after 200 players from the 16 clubs voted after a year of failed negotiations with the Association of Women's Football Clubs.

The players are seeking to be full-time professionals with the minimum wage raised to 20,000 Euros, though their clubs have asked for the increase to be set at 16,000. In addition they want a maternity policy, holiday and injury leave.

UDG Tenerife, who were due to play Espanyol on Saturday, said they 'respect the position of the players to support the strike' but hope an agreement can be met soon 'for the sake of women's football and generations to come'.

The rearranged date of the cancelled fixtures has not yet been confirmed.

Atletico Madrid's England international Toni Duggan took to Twitter to share her support with her team-mates.

She tweeted: "Womens football WEEKEND in England.... Womens football STRIKES in Spain... The game has come a long way BUT we must keep fighting - For each other & for the next generation!"
