New Zealand win first ever Cape Town Sevens after beating Australia in front of 55,000 strong crowd

The Black Ferns have claimed victory at the first ever women's Cape Town Sevens after beating rivals Australia 17-7 in the final.

New Zealand struck first through Kelly Brazier and Ruby Tui to be 12-0 up before the break.

Australia hit back through Ellia Green in the second half to make it 12-7 but Tui, who was named player of the final, hadn't finished and scored again to make it 17-7. The match was watched by a 55,000 strong crowd.

New Zealand's Tyla Nathan Wong said post-match: "It's incredible to be here in Cape Town for the very first time, to have a women's team in a place like South Africa it's just amazing!

"I'm so proud of these girls, these last two weeks have been everything, we worked so hard and we pulled through in the end.

"Ever since we touched down in this country the people have just been so welcoming, this is definitely my favourite tournament of the whole series."

The bronze final was a close affair with Canada coming out on top to redeem something from the tournament. France led 17-7 but Canada came back to make it 17 a piece which pushed the game to extra time. The Canadians won 22-17 to take third place.
