World No 1 Ashleigh Barty named WTA Player of the Year for 2019

World No 1 and French Open champion Ashleigh Barty has been named the WTA's Player of the Year for 2019.

The 23-year-old secured her maiden Grand Slam title at Roland-Garros in June by defeating Martina Vondrousova 6-1 6-3 in the final.

After topping the women's rankings, a poor run of results during the summer led to her losing the world No 1 position to Naomi Osaka.

But the Aussie regained top spot shortly after to finish 2019 as the best player in the world.

And Barty's coach, Craig Tyzzer, also received an award as he picked up the WTA Coach of the Year.

Meanwhile, fellow Roland Garros champions Timea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic were voted Doubles Team of the Year, with American Sofia Kenin handed the most improved award.

The newcomer prize went to 19-year-old Canadian Bianca Andreescu, who burst onto the scene with her US Open victory in September.

Other winners included Belinda Bencic for Comeback of the Year, and Kiki Bertens, who claimed the WTA Jerry Diamond ACES award for consistently going above and beyond in promoting the sport of women’s tennis to fans, media, and local communities.
