Tennis stars Caroline Wozniacki and Serena Williams announce doubles partnership for WTA Auckland Open

Tennis stars Caroline Wozniacki and Serena Williams have announced they will be playing doubles together for the first time at the WTA Auckland Open.

The tournament begins on January 6 and will be the last time Wozniacki plays at the competition as she announced her retirement this month.

Wozniacki will hanging up her racket after the Australian Open which finishes in early February 2020.

The Dane said: “We’ve been wanting to play doubles together for a long time, but it just hasn’t worked out so I’m really excited that it’s finally going to happen, especially at one of my favourite tournaments on tour. It’s going to be so much fun!”

The Tournament Director, Karl Budge, said: “This is a pairing that I think tennis fans have been waiting to see for a long time.

"To have Serena and Caroline on court together, on the same side of the net, is an amazing opportunity for tennis fans to see history being made”

The duo have played against one another 11 times with Williams being the victor on ten occasions.

The American has 14 doubles titles that she won with her partner and sister Venus Williams whereas the Dane has two.

As well as going into a partnership on court, the close friends have also confirmed that they will be playing against each other for the final time in an exhibition match in Copenhagen in May.

Away from the court, both women have been making headlines recently by tackling challenges outside tennis.

Serena got a boxing lesson from former heavywight champion Mike Tyson at the "Mouratoglou Preseason" in Florida, an annual camp organized by Williams' coach, Patrick Mouratoglou.

While Wozniacki showed off her modelling credentials by baring all in a photoshoot for Sports Illustrated after announcing her retirement.
